Anyone for tennis? The game of tennis as we know it today began to gain popularity in late 19th century England. One factor that helped boost its appeal was the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament.

Wimbledon's first tournament was held in 1877. It was a fundraiser to help the club pay for new lawn equipment. Twenty-two players entered and 200 spectators attended what was the world's first organized tennis tournament.

Wimbledon today boasts a total of over 600 spots for competitors in its five main events. Annual attendance figures are now closer 500,000, at 35,500 spectators a day. Millions more follow the action on the court via TV, radio and the Internet.
